Blogging Basics: Finding Your Niche!

Based on the survey results I shared last week, several people indicated Blogging Basics would be a topic they would be interested in seeing.

So, I wrote it down and decided to do a blog series over it. I understand that these posts may not be for everyone; a lot of you may have no intention of creating a blog. But, I wanted to address it because I read many posts about blogging when I first started and they helped me tremendously.

So, today, I am addressing Finding Your Niche! If there are some topics that fall under this category that you would be interested in seeing, please comment below or shoot me an email.

So far, I will be addressing (in addition to today’s post):

  • The Editorial Calendar
  • Layout & Design
  • Networking & Social Media
  • Photography

These posts take me into March. I will probably add a few more topics, so please send me suggestions.

Finding Your Niche is very important in the blogging world. But, it is something that may not happen overnight.  For me, it was a trial and error situation.

So, what in the heck is a niche?

A blogging niche is basically what your blog centers around. What topics do you cover? How are you going to market your blog (your product)? Yes, your blog is a product that you are marketing. You need to be able to stand behind your blog and support it all the way. So, you need to find your niche. And, make sure you don’t narrow it down too much. Choose a niche that has many different categories underneath it.

I started blogging in May 2011 and it wasn’t pretty. I had no idea what I was doing, so I had no idea a blogging niche even existed. I was randomly throwing topics out there to see what stuck. Remember, my original name was “Kristin’s Notebook.” And, it was definitely a notebook full of all sorts of topics, notes, ideas, and information. Take a look at my first blog post and the first 8 months of posts and you will see exactly what I am talking about. Yikes!

After about 8 months, I decided I needed to narrow down my focus. I looked through my posts to determine which ones got the most traffic. The most popular were the ones about decorating and organizing.

So, I decided organizing and decorating would be my focus. Now, since that time, my niche has shifted a little; I have added gifting in the mix. But, essentially, my niche has centered around those two areas.

I was happy those were the two most popular topics because I felt comfortable talking about them. I was passionate about those topics. So, if I did things correctly, my readers could see my passion. And, I think I have accomplished that goal (most of the time).

You want to be comfortable and confident in your posts. If you don’t know anything about football, then you shouldn’t center a blog around it. And, plus, it won’t feel right to you either.

Don’t force a niche if it isn’t meant to be.

The longer you write, the more your blog will mold around you. So, if you don’t know your niche immediately or even a year after posting, it is ok. Keep writing! It will develop and it will eventually outshine all of the other topics.

Then, you will see a smile on your face and you will know it is right!
